Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes: Is there a link?

Fuel Your Heart, Feed Your Health

People with diabetes are at higher risk for heart disease—but healthy food choices and lifestyle habits can play a powerful role in protecting your heart.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death for people living with diabetes. In fact, people with Type 2 diabetes are more likely to develop and die from cardiovascular diseases—such as heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure—than people who do not have diabetes. Because of this strong connection, the American Heart Association considers diabetes one of the major controllable risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

The good news? Many of the factors that increase heart disease risk can be managed—and even improved—through informed, consistent choices.

Understanding the Risk Factors

Several conditions and behaviors contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease, especially for people living with diabetes. These include:

  • High blood pressure • High cholesterol and/or high triglycerides • Obesity • A sedentary lifestyle • Unmanaged blood sugar levels • Smoking

While this list may feel overwhelming, it’s important to remember that small changes can have a meaningful impact. Addressing even one or two of these risk factors can help lower your overall risk and improve both heart health and diabetes management.

How Food Fuels Your Heart

What you eat matters. Heart-healthy food choices can help regulate blood sugar, improve cholesterol levels, reduce inflammation, and support a healthy weight—all of which are essential for protecting your heart.

Building meals around whole, nutrient-dense foods is a great place to start. Think:

  • High-fiber foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes • Healthy fats from sources such as olive oil, nuts, seeds, avocados, and fatty fish • Lean proteins that support fullness and blood sugar stability • Limiting added sugars, excess sodium, and highly processed foods

When paired with regular physical activity and healthy habits, these food choices help “fuel your heart and feed your health.”

Lifestyle Choices Matter Too

Food is just one piece of the puzzle. Staying active, managing stress, quitting smoking, and working with your healthcare provider to keep blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood glucose in target ranges are all critical steps in reducing cardiovascular risk.

Remember—progress doesn’t require perfection. Sustainable changes, practiced consistently, add up over time.  And aren’t you worth it??

Take the Next Step

Want to learn more about how to manage these risks and reduce the impact of cardiovascular disease?

Start by talking with your healthcare provider, exploring heart-healthy nutrition strategies (see all of the class opportunities locally on Facebook and in our newsletter this month!), and finding movement and habits that fit your lifestyle. Every positive choice—no matter how small—is a step toward a stronger heart and better overall health.

Your heart works hard for you every day. Fuel it well. 💙
