Now that the weather has warmed, and we’ve stretched and flexed our feet in March, it’s important to pay attention to footwear as we log our steps. Diabetic sock footwear is a very important element to healthy foot care. Diabetic socks not only provide comfort but also offer moisture management which helps keep your feet dry and reduces the risk of bacterial and fungal infections; seamless construction which eliminates friction that causes blisters and foot ulcers; and extra padding for cushioned support to absorb shock and reduce foot fatigue.
In addition, properly fitting diabetic socks will help reduce the nagging issue of sock crimping within the shoe or sneaker. Taking a daily walk without having the irritation of crimping or sagging socks will bring satisfaction to our feet and our minds. As we venture into summer, we want to enjoy the scenery and conversation rather than focus on irritated feet.
Compression socks are not diabetic socks; they are designed to boost circulation and treat conditions like edema or varicose veins. Check with your physician regarding the need for compression socks as they feature a tighter fit. While some diabetics might wear low-level compression with doctor approval, high-pressure compression socks can potentially restrict circulation too much for those with severe peripheral neuropathy.
As with any socks, be sure to keep them clean by washing after daily use. Be aware of any wear and tear issues like snag or hole formation. A properly maintained pair of socks keeps the feet secure, comfortable and healthy.
Happy feet will help bring a happy Spring and a spring to our steps. Enjoy the beauty around you as nature blossoms around us. Keep walking to help nurture a healthy lifestyle.
