Diabetes in Men

Good day! I hope this post finds you well.

This month’s topic focuses on Diabetes in Men. Both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes can lead to a variety of health complications in men, including cardiovascular disease, nerve damage, kidney disease, and vision problems.

In addition, men with diabetes are at greater risk for conditions such as erectile dysfunction, urological issues, sleep apnea, hearing impairment, slow wound healing, and increased risk for dementia. In fact, studies show that up to 50% of men with diabetes experience erectile dysfunction.

Common symptoms of diabetes include:

  • Frequent urination
  • Unusual fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Tingling or numbness in the hands and feet

Other lesser-known symptoms can include:

  • Styes in the eyes
  • Bacterial infections in hair follicles
  • Fungal infections under the toes and fingernails
  • Sharp or shooting pains in the hands and feet

Men aged 45 and older are at a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Additional risk factors include the accumulation of excess abdominal fat—commonly referred to as the “beer belly.”

Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed during childhood or adolescence and is managed with insulin and other medications.
Type 2 diabetes often develops later in life and is frequently linked to lifestyle factors. It can often be managed—or even prevented—through healthy habits without the need for medication.

Key lifestyle changes include:

  • Regular physical activity
  • A balanced, healthy diet
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Avoiding smoking

These changes can significantly reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes or help manage its complications and symptoms.

I hope you found this information helpful and informative. Wishing you continued health and happiness!
