February is the time of the year where spring is just around the corner, and while winter still might be hanging around for a few more weeks, that does not mean that there are not some great super foods that are in season.
In this month’s article, I am going to look at three super foods that are in season right now and are perfect for those who are looking to manage their blood sugar and eat healthy. As with anything, portion size and moderation is key. Also, checking with a dietician or your medical provider when trying any new foods is always recommended. For now, let’s look at three foods that are currently in season.
1. Kale
Studies have shown that leafy green vegetables like kale can help prevent Type 2 Diabetes. Kale is packed with vitamins A, C, E, calcium, and iron. The fiber in kale can also improve glucose levels. February is when this super food is in season and is perfect for healthy salads, steaming, and even making smoothies.
2. Cauliflower
Cauliflower is a great food choice for those with diabetes looking to control their blood sugar. With tons of vitamin C, high fiber content, and low in carbohydrates, this vegetable is great for grilling, mashing, or even used as a pizza crust. This is the best time of year to get cauliflower at your local market or grocery store.
3. Sweet Potatoes
Don’t let the word sweet fool you. Sweet potatoes are a good choice when it comes to people looking to manage their blood sugar. Packed with vitamin A, fiber, and antioxidants, it is one of the best potatoes when it comes to nutritional value. You can try them baked with their skin off, mashed, and even in a smoothie. Now is one of the best times of the year to try this super food.
These are just some of the amazing foods that are in season this time of the year. As with any person who is managing this blood sugar, portion size and daily monitoring is key. Again, be sure to check with your dietician or medical providers when trying any food for the first time.
